Eyesight examination | Care and advice
A complete eyesight examination is the best way to ensure good vision and healthy eyes throughout your life. In order to offer you the best care possible, your optometrist needs to know about your general state of health, the way you use your eyes and any other unusual symptoms you may be experiencing. Here is a list of things that your optometrist needs to know:
- Chronic conditions, for example, high blood pressure, diabetes or allergies that you or members of your family may have. Because your eyes are a part of your body, they are affected by your general state of health
- Any ocular problems, such as glaucoma, that may exist in your family
- Any drugs that you take, prescription or otherwise, especially tetracycline based medication for acne, as these products can sometimes affect your eyes and vision.
- The manner in which you use your eyes at work. Your optometrist needs to know if your work places special demands on your eyes in order to offer you the best advice or the best glasses.
- Your sports and pastimes. It is possible that you treat your eyes differently during your leisure activities or that you need the appropriate protection for your eyes.
- Any problems or difficulties that you experience with your eyes, for example, blurred vision, double vision, black spots or other objects in your field of view, headaches, burning sensations in your eyes, itchiness or fatigue, diminished ability to distinguish colours, difficulty to see at night or under reduced light conditions, a tendency to make mistakes or a fluctuation in your performance in sports.
Your optometrist will take careful note of all your problems in order to compile an accurate record of your ocular health antecedents. If you don’t want to overlook anything, why not jot down in advance the things you want to say to your optometrist.
